VOLUNTEERING

Heritage Volunteers.

NADFAS Societies throughout the country are involved in cataloguing, conserving and cleaning objects which are important to our national and local heritage.

New Project at Stonyhurst: In collaboration with neighbouring societies, including Ribble & Craven and Fylde, we have embarked on a project to stitch 16 kneelers. The inaugural meeting was attended by a contingent from Birmingham DFAS along with Helen McCook from the Royal Society of Embroidery. The Birmingham team will complete the two that they have started. The remainder are to be worked on by members from Lancashire for the Stonyhurst College Chapel.
A Training Day with Helen McCook is planned for 9th February 2012 at the college. It is envisaged that the work will be carried out as groups in one anothers homes.
Shown below are two of the kneelers being examined and worked upon.

Existing Projects: In conjunction with the Ribble and Craven Society, for many years we have been working at the Queen's Lancashire Regimental Museum, Fulwood Barracks, Preston. This project has covered the cataloguing of historic and modern uniforms, silver and regimental regalia and artefacts, as well as cataloguing the documents relating to Regimental history. The work of the volunteers greatly assisted the Museum to gain the National Museum Accreditation, awarded in 2008.
In January 2012 we will commence another 6 week session of cleaning, photographing, wrapping and cataloguing paintings.

Volunteers have also catalogued and photographed the Blackburn Art Gallery and Museum's ceramic and ethnic collections and The Hart Collection of rare books. The most recent project was the cleaning and cataloguing of their silver collection. The Patricia Fay Memorial Fund sponsored the training for this project.

Church Recording.

The society is currently involved with Ribble and Craven society in a joint project of recording at St.Mary's Osbaldestone.

If you are interested in helping with any of these projects do get in touch. We would particularly like to hear from people willing to give some time to the embroidery for Stonyhurst. There are only five stitch types involved so anyone with a modest ability to sew is welcome. Please put your name forward!
